Episode 7. Abstraction II: Creative Coding
Create with code. Make art with algorithm. Collaborate with computers… Sound complicated? It's actually super fun!
In this episode, Huy & Lili will show you how to get inspired and arty with creative coding so you can have a go at making your own interactive art.
What is Creative Coding?
Creative coding is a type of computer programming in which the goal is to create something expressive instead of something functional. (Wikipedia)
It’s basically taking some static codes and turning them into a responsive and interactive visual display. You don’t have to be a computer genius to play with the concept. There are free and open-source programs that can help you learn while exploring. We’ve listed them below so you can have a play.
Processing is a flexible software sketchbook and a language for learning how to code within the context of the visual arts with lots of examples and resources to cater for ‘creative-coders’ of all levels.
Crystal Code Palace is an online portal where you can find tutorials and play games using generative text and creative code. Try Tracery, by GalaxyKate, a JavaScript library that uses grammars to generate surprising new text. It’s a great way to get inspired and brainstorm ideas using computer algorithm.
Arduino is for the makers, DIYers and aspiring engineers. It’s an open-source electronic prototyping platform enabling users to create interactive electronic objects. So if you like making objects that move or a robot that responds to sound… this is the perfect buddy for your interactive projects.

Exercise - Experiment with code
Now it’s your turn to get creative with coding and express yourself through interactive art. Visit these free and open source websites and have a play:
Make as many images as you like – the glitchier the better. Take a screenshot of your visual displays and share them with us!
Share Your Art
Once you’ve completed the exercise or if you just have something cool to show us, take photos, videos or scans of your journal or work in progress and share it via social media. Make sure you tag us @lostinbookssydney or use the hashtag #TofPArtStudio so we can see it.
You can also submit your artwork by emailing to art@lostinbooks.com.au to receive feedback from our artists Huy and Lili, and for a chance to be featured in our online Art gallery.
