Episode 6. Design Basics

August 13, 2020 by Jane Stratton

Design is anything but basic. There is so much more to Design than flyers and brochures, photoshopping images or product packaging. Design is an experience.

In this episode, Huy addresses some burning questions about being a conscious designer in the new age, and what it means to design for good and to design for diversity.

“Be well, do good work and keep in touch.” - Garrison Keillor

Huy is a professional graphic designer with a genuine passion for Design as Art and Experience Design. Below he shares some of his best personal and professional creative projects to give you an insight into the design principles and process he employs to create a good design, and what inspires him to be a better designer.

“I want to design to be a better person.” - Huy Nguyen

Exercise - Inspired Design

Think of a topic or issue that you feel passionate about, or something that you or someone you know experienced that inspired you. Write down all your thoughts and feelings, no matter if it seems weird or out of the box. Do some research, read books and magazines, or go online to find inspiration. Look for visual images that you like or want to create, and have a go at making your own design.

You can design anything using whatever you get your hands on – pen and paper or an app on your computer or smartphone – you can even create a new designs from bits and pieces of random objects. Just go with it and get creative!
