The Art of Zines: Safdar Ahmed on comics, zine-making and the Refugee Art Project
About Safdar Ahmed
Safdar Ahmed is an Illustrator, volunteer at Refugee Art Project and valued Workshop Facilitator at Lost In Books. Upon our return to face-to-face creative programming in 2020, we were fortunate enough to have Safdar join Lost In Books as we worked in partnership with CORE Community Services to deliver a creative writing and comics program. Led by Safdar's experience and skills in comic drawing and illustration, each workshop participant was supported to create new work and develop their own unique style of storytelling. Of the experience, our participants said they were so grateful to Safdar for his patience and his teaching style with one saying; "I didn't even know what comics were about until I came here, but now I love it!" This year, their works will be published in a forthcoming anthology printed through Lost In Books' own publishing house; Forked Tongues Publishing.

Safdar's connections with workshop participants, emerging and professional artists throughout Western Sydney and beyond, alongside his own professional practice, is an exciting and important asset to our growing collection of hand-made zines, book objects and multiform artworks.
Zines made by refugees
Lost In Books is proud to be supporting the sale of zines on behalf of Safdar and Refugee Art Project. These self published zines feature artwork, poetry and stories by people of a refugee background from Afghanistan, Iran and Sri Lanka, Iraq and Myanmar. Many of these zines are made by refugees in the Villawood Detention Centre.
