Mother, mum, mommy, mama, 母亲, nanay, ahm, mẹ, ماما, milczący, mor, moeder, maji, mamman. No matter where you’re from and what language you speak, a mother’s love is a universal language that we can all understand.
Mothers are the heart and soul of everything we do at Lost In Books. To us, Mother is synonymous with LOVE. Mothers are the threads that weave our story and connect us all. Mothers lead our community of multilingual volunteers, staff, storytellers, artists and educators. Their dedication, hard work and devotion is the inspiration and driving force behind our work.
Lost In Books exists because of Mothers in our community who strive to provide the best quality of life and wellbeing for their children, whether it is through literature, art, music and language learning. Our bookshop was built to provide women and mothers in South Western and Western Sydney, who come from refugee and migrant backgrounds, a safe space to care for their children while also nurturing their Mother languages and their connection to their Mother land.

Mother’s Day holds a very significant place for all of us at Lost In Books. But this universal celebration of motherhood, while not always celebrated on the same day, has long-standing roots dating back to ancient history. The Egyptians honoured the goddess Isis, who was likened to the mother of the Pharaohs, while the ancient Greeks and Romans dedicated festivals to the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele.
Mother’s Day is a day of celebration of mothers from all cultures and across all walks of life. It is a time to pay tribute to all the amazing Mothers around the world for their gift of unconditional love for their children, their families and their communities.
