National Reconciliation Week

May 30, 2020 by Jane Stratton in Young Adult

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The theme for this year's National Reconciliation Week is ‘In This Together’, inviting all Australian communities to come together in the journey towards reconciliation. Storytelling is an integral part of this journey because it is through sharing stories that the histories and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and of all Australians, live on through generations.

Lost In Books supports learning about Indigenous language, history and culture through our rich collection of books by Indigenous writers and illustrators in English and in Australian First Nations languages.

This National Reconciliation Week, we’ve put together a wonderful list of picture books and literature celebrating Indigenous stories. Read on to explore.
